Guitar Hero and Rock Band Controller Compatibility

This guide is taken from the ScoreHero forum thread, The Official Controller Compatibility Guide compiled by User_IWillKickU IWillKickU. This guide is designed to help answer the common question, "Does X guitar work with X game, on X system?" If you have anything to add please feel free to edit this page.

Rock Band Track Packs Note: All Rock Band Track Packs (including the AC/DC pack) run on the Rock Band 1 engine so any compatibility that applies to RB1 applies to the track packs. EXCEPT the AC/DC pack for Wii which is compatible with the Les Paul and GHWT guitar (without touch slider functionality).

Unorthodox Compatibility (PS2)

For all games Post GHIII (GH:A onwards), USB compatibility was introduced, allowing for some unorthodox combinations of official instrument controllers from other consoles.

General Troubleshooting

The most common problem reported is that the whammy bar does not function properly. If Windows is detecting your controller, but won't allow you to use it in-game, try unistalling the game, and the device drivers completely and reinstalling.
Add your troubleshooting tips HERE!

Multiplayer

Two players cannot both be mapped to the the keyboard. To overcome this problem, you may create a virtual GH controller supported by the GH software, through the use of PPJoy and registry modification to rename the virtual joystick. Then, GlovePIE is used to map the real, unsupported controller to the virtual controller. For the other player, GlovePIE maps the controller to the keyboard, as usual. This permits multiplayer with any combination of controllers.

I went ahead and added my tables (created an InstrumentCompatibility page because I didn't know this existed >_<) because they look a lot better than the text and they're much easier to read/organize in my opinion. Feel free to revert back/edit them of course but I didn't want them to go to waste.
-- footballtom3685 (2008-10-21 00:43:33)
This is G-Rad. I have played WORld Tour on my PS2 and tested and can confirm the following:

Cross Compatability is not limited to just the 360 and PS3.

On the PS2 I have tested the Xbox 360 Xplorer, Rock Band Drums and Strat and they both work nicel. I've also tested the PS3 Rock Band Drums and Les Paul w/Dongle. They work just as good. Just plug them into the USB port on the PS2 and go to town.
-- doc-24-32-10-108.terrell.tx.cebridge.net (2008-10-23 23:41:55)
(Sorry if I'm not supposed to ask here) is there any word on the PS3 GHWT Guitar working with GH1/2/80's on a backward compatible PS3?
It isn't even mentioned on the chart.
-- CPE-124-188-216-83.nsw.bigpond.net.au (2008-10-27 23:10:53)
If you are currently playing them on a PS3 you could probably answer best. If the Les Paul works than most likely the GHWT guitar will work.
-- baylxr (2008-10-28 18:38:37)
Any idea whether the Wii GH3 Les Paul works with the AC/DC Track Pack? My friend has no interest in Rock Band, but wants to play guitar on the AC/DC songs on his Wii. I know the track pack has parts of the RB1 engine (most of it) but some aspects of RB2 (calibration, apparently vocal engine) so I don't know where it falls in terms of controller compatibility.
-- ricecake (2008-11-05 17:42:49)
The ACDC pack runs completely on the RB1 engine (don't know where you heard that parts of it are RB2) so anything that applies to RB1 applies to the ACDC pack which means the Wii LP will not work on the ACDC pack but it will work if you export them to RB2
-- baylxr (2008-11-05 17:53:46)
Well, sluggo got the impression that it was the RB2 vocal engine (http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=257033#257033 but I don't do vocals so I can't confirm), but I can personally confirm (at least on PS2) that the calibration system is the RB2 one, not the RB1. Otherwise I would agree that it is the RB1 engine.
-- ricecake (2008-11-05 18:23:50)
just because there are no talky problems doesn't mean it's the RB2 engine... but.... even if it does have part of the RB2 engine I would definitely still not count on the Wii LP working with it
-- baylxr (2008-11-05 18:40:26)
OK thanks, I guess I will have to be the bearer of bad news for my friend then.
-- ricecake (2008-11-05 18:47:29)
Possible GH:WT Wii and PS2 compatability chart:
http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18123
http://adams.aghq.net/~chris/ghwt/compat2.jpg
-- BriGuy (2008-11-13 19:51:55)
^ that chart appears to be inaccurate because an official announcement stated the LP would work with RB2 and no other official announcement has been made denying that. Also the Striker does work with RB. So I don't think we can really trust anything on that chart.. but thanks :)
-- baylxr (2008-11-13 22:10:06)
Accurate or not, here is the link with all 4 systems:
http://community.guitarhero.com/forums/14/forum_topics/137209

BriGuy/mystery poster above me: the stickied chart in the GH forums has since been removed so I think Neversoft realized its mistake(s)
-- baylxr (2008-11-14 19:37:04)
i can confirm that the 1st gen strat works with PS2 WT so i added it to the chart
-- shooter21198 (2008-11-15 23:32:18)
As a followup, according to nicko68, the Wii Les Paul DOES work with the AC/DC Track Pack, but does NOT work with Track Pack 2.
http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=268123#268123
-- ricecake (2008-11-22 23:41:00)
Yeah I added that to the little RB TPs note at the top
-- baylxr (2008-11-23 02:31:55)
Unless I missed something, this great page does not tell about playing PS2 GHs on PS3 with PS3 guitars, say GH III Les Paul.
(GH 1&2 launch successfully on backward compatible PS3, but PS2 guitars support is non-existent and, as mentionned here, only partial with an adapter)
Any info about that ?
-- LiuKahr (2008-11-23 18:00:29)
It's strange that the compatibility matrix says that Drum kit from GH:WT bundle doesn't work with RB1&2. I have read that the instrument on the PS3 should work will all the newest games...

I also read that the instrument pack are the same for PS2 and PS3 ? Any confirmation about this ? I find it somewhat logical but can't find any trustworthy information about it.
-- Boon (2008-11-24 07:18:33)
can anyone confirm that GHWT drums Don't Work with RB1 on ps3?
It seems strange that the RB1 drums would work with GHWT, and the WT drums would work with RB2, but not WT drums on RB1
-- Necromac (2008-11-27 22:52:14)
The WT drums work in RB2 b/c HMX released a patch for RB2. So right now WT drums do not work with RB1 however if HMX releases a patch for RB1 in the future (very unlikely) then they could be compatible. Also the RB1 drums work with WT b/c the RB1 drums are pretty much the same as the RB2 drums in terms of input so the game recognizes it the same.

tl;dr: WT drums do NOT work in RB1
-- baylxr (2008-11-27 23:47:15)
So they did release a patch for the 360, but not ps3?
-- Necromac (2008-11-27 23:54:39)
No it just worked for the 360 lol... no but seriously the PS3 has like no compatibility (see the note!) so all the games have to be patched up, but with the 360 everything works from the start (for the most part).
-- baylxr (2008-11-28 00:04:13)
I've a couple of questions that need to be answered.

1) Are the PS2 WT Drums the same as the PS3 Drums? Are they shared across systems, like the RB Drums?
2) Do the WT drums work on Rock Band 1 PS2, or more specifically, Track Pack 1?
-- ShiftBreaker (2008-12-10 13:06:05)
Under PC/Mac, I have a couple of additions:

GlovePIE will actually let you sync two Wii/GH guitars to a single BlueTooth dongle, just takes a little patience to sync them in sequence. Have done this for some two player FoF.

XP also recognizes the RB1 wireless Strat for Wii - works amazingly well in FoF.
-- Finnulf (2009-01-07 09:34:46)
So I got a question, I'm just looking at the Unorthodox Combinations and is it possible then to use PS2 equipment like mic drums and guitar on the 360 then?
-- kippy007 (2009-02-03 21:19:35)
Hi, I'm from Lima Peru and I have a question. I wanna buy an guitar to play in my PC but here is too dificult to find a Xplorer Guitar, so I decided to buy a wireless guitar for XBOX 360 or PS3... Which guitar is the best to play GHIII and GHIII:A on PC???
-- Kenshizzle (2009-02-09 13:22:58)
Hey, that an amazing work here, but I tried my X360 RB1 drums on my PS2, and it works with GH:WT
But, sadly, not on RB1 or 2
-- poulet (2009-03-03 09:25:35)
Added Kramer and Red SG work with RB2 on PS2.
-- louster200 (2009-04-07 00:28:13)
I have heard from certain people that the PS2/3 Strat does infact work with GH:A on the PS3, though I've not been able to test it myself. As such, I've left it blank. Also, I've updated the PS2 Drum table to show a lack of compatability with the WT Drum Set on RB1. RB2 I'm unsure about.
-- ShiftBreaker (2009-05-04 16:08:38)
Added confirmation of PS2 RB1 drums working on WT.
-- Bmad965 (2009-05-23 18:56:27)
Red Octane Works RB2 PS2
-- 2003041 (2009-05-23 21:16:08)
On playstation 2 : (ps2 controllers)

- the guitar (GHWT) and the drums (GHWT) DON'T WORK on Rock Band 2

- the new singstar wireless microphones DON'T WORK on any Games on ps2. (Tested on GH:M / GHWT / RB / RB2)
-- Jokojo (2009-06-06 09:41:36)
Hi! I've just bought a PS3 guitar (Les Paul) and it was recognized by my PC but I have a doubt. I heard that the guitar can totally work on PC but I can't activate "Start Power" pulling up my guitar... Is this normal? I have to push "Select" if I want to use it? Is there a driver that I have to download it? Sorry for my English but I try to find a solution for this problem...
-- Kenshizzle (2009-06-24 04:47:25)
PS2/3 RB1 Strat doesn't seem to work with 360 GH3 and GH:SH
Will it work with RB ? (on x360)
-- poulet (2009-07-02 03:16:33)
The article has been re-vamped and organized. I'd like a little inspection of the article to see what errors are about. I may have missed some things to which some controllers may not be compatible for that game. In case if I have, you can correct it.
-- Oddbrother (2009-09-07 02:05:37)
It seems that there is an error

On PS2 :
- It seems that Original Singstar microphones (WITH WIRE) work with Rock Band. I have to verify.

- About Unorthodox Compatibility : Rock Band and GHWT Drums are the same for PS2 and PS3. There is no difference. So they work with the same games.
-- Jokojo (2009-09-07 18:56:26)
On PS2 :

- Same comment about the "ION drum Rocker", the PS2 & PS3 model are the same so it works with Rock Band 1 & 2. (I don't know about GH games, I've read on a forum that there are some problems with cymbals)

- The "Wireless Singstar Microphones" don't work with GHSH. We can guess that it doesn't work with GH5 but not sure.

- Old singstar mics don't work with GHWT. We can also guess that it doesn't work with GHM, GHSH & GH5 but not sure too.
-- Jokojo (2009-09-08 07:35:34)
Here is a better picture for RR Drum set :

http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/6/6/2/2/8/7/webimg/212540960_o.jpg
-- Jokojo (2009-09-09 19:00:48)
I'd just like to make a correction: On the Xbox 360, the wireless RB2 drums DO feature velocity sensitivity on GH5. I was able to test this myself on launch day at my friends house with his RB2 drums. Velocity sensitivity works flawlessly.

Holy crap, I thought GH instruments don't work on Wii RB2?! When did they become compatible?? I'm seriously considering buying TB:RB and RB2 now...

They always do. By the way, why is Wii Speak even up there? Any game that's compatible with Wii Speak has a Wii Speak Label on it.

Unorthodox Compatibility :

- PS3 Les Paul works on GH5 PS2
-- Jokojo (2009-11-01 19:01:06)
On the PS2 :
- The microphones wired or wireless don't work with GHM / GHSH / GH5

Is this page no longer updated ?

I added the PS3 Les Paul for PS2 GH5, based on Jokojo's comment.

On PS2 :
- The PS3 Les Paul doesn't work on Rock Band 2

- I repeat that the SINGSTAR microphones Wired or Wireless don't work with GHM / GHSH / GH5

I'm pretty sure that at least some of the RB guitars work on GH:A PS2, if not all of them. Matter of fact, from looking through the disc files, I think that even the 360 Xplorer (and maybe the Les Paul) will work. I don't have a working PS Strat anymore so I can't test it, but I do have a copy of GH:A PS2 here, so within a few days I can look at the files and see if it's supported.

Scratch that, I just checked it now, and all the info was already here - PS2 GH:A supports the PS3 Strat, which is the exact same controller as the PS2 Strat. I assume that the later RB controller would work as well (but not sure, so might need to split the table unless the later controllers work with the USB dongle, which I think they might, but don't know).

Also found that BCUI.IRX on PS2 GH5 contains the following strings (and thus presumably supports the following controllers):

PS3 GH3 Guitar
PS3 Rockband Guitar
PS3 Rockband Drums
360 Rockband Guitar
360 Rockband Drums
360 USB Gamepad (!)
360 GH2 Guitar
PS2 USB Adapter (!)
PS3 GH4 Drums

For the record, the GHWT BCUI.IRX contains all of the above except for the 360 USB Gamepad. Not sure how one would get that to work, except with the kit to hook it up to the PC.

I've added the Xbox360 controller emulator under the PC section. Tutorial made by me, kereta.
