List of Non-5* FCable Songs on Rock Band Drums

Rock Band has a unique approach to activating Overdrive for its drum charts. Unlike Guitar and Bass in Harmonix's previous endeavors, Drums have set activation points marked in the .mid files that determine when a freeform fill is generated. Once you obtain enough Overdrive to be able to utilize these freeform fills, there is a set amount of time they will not appear. In Rock Band 1, this was a set time for all difficulties after the last Overdrive phrase obtained. In Rock Band 2, this time is different per difficulty and is also affected by Breakneck Speed.

One fact of these freeform fills is left to be discussed and, eventually, exploited. Whenever a freeform fill appears, it covers notes that are on the drum track, effectively removing them from the chart and reducing the amount of notes played for score in the song. This, however, does not affect the cutoffs of the song and does not break your FC. Regardless of how many fills you may use to skip notes, your FC will remain intact, but the cutoffs remain based off of how many notes are actually charted for the song.

Herein lies the exploitation. Because the cutoffs remain the same, certain songs actually cover up enough notes that there simply aren't enough notes to hit to break the 5 star cutoff. The most notorious recent example of this does not require Overdrive exploitation at all; Polly, released in Nirvana Pack 01, has 8 notes in total, which is no where near enough notes for a song to reach a 5 star in Rock Band. Certain songs, however, can be forced into this predicament. By removing enough notes from the track by never activating Overdrive, certain songs just cannot reach that 5 star cutoff.

This page's sole purpose is to document the songs that are released through the Rock Band platform that can be FCd with less than a 5 star. Eventually, it will be expanded for all difficulties on all forms of the Rock Band platform, but for now, the list is solely for Expert Drums on Rock Band 2. The list is currently incomplete, and with DLC being added continuously, it may remain that way for an extended period. For now, feel free to take the information given here and try it out for yourself!

UPDATE: With this update, I have reached 350 songs checked out of 523! The latest DLC that has come out is the "Going Country Pack 01", which features hard rockin' Country artists (and has some fucking awesome guitar charts to boot). Out of these 350 songs, 206 songs mathematically can be FC'd without a 5*! That's freakin over HALF!!! Still just under 60% of the songs, but an ever-increasing list. This update brings 30 new songs, matching the previous update.
