Guitar Hero (PS2)

Guitar Hero

After reading the GameSpot review for Guitar Hero, I mulled over the decision of purchasing Guitar Hero when I saw it at my local Target. I purchased the game and guitar bundle for $60. This was in the first week of the game's release. About two or three weeks later, the game/guitar bundle jumped up to $80. Best deal I ever got. I went home and played it and received ridicule from my roommate when he came home and saw me playing the game. The moment he got behind the guitar, though, he became an addict. I played the game inside and out the whole year, moving up from the bottom, through Hard and Expert. I would always get tripped up on every difficulty by the one-two-three punch of Ace of Spades, No One Knows and Crossroads. I eventually got to Bark at the Moon, and on one of my biggest chokes ever, failed on the last note on my second or third playthrough of the song. According to timestamps on the ScoreHero site, I submitted a score for Cowboys From Hell on June 9th, 2006, and then five minutes later is my earliest known score submission for Bark at the Moon on Expert, with a whopping 3.2 star, 94,087 performance. I've managed to increase my score to 291,504 since then.

Guitar Hero II (PS2)

Guitar Hero II

By the time the sequel was rolling around, I was definitely hooked, picking up the OPM Demo and hanging out in front of my GameStop at midnight to pick up the game. I had actually played the full Guitar Hero II game to a certain extent thanks to a rogue GameStop employee who I was friends with and brought the game home with him about a week before its release. I clearly saw this as a big step up from Guitar Hero I and some notable sightread fails of songs that I now can play quite well include Laid to Rest, Less Talk More Rokk, and Psychobilly Freakout. I beat the final tier of Guitar Hero II in one night, however, an amazing run as I passed all five songs with only two or three fails in-between, somehow managing to finally beat Free Bird. After beating Free Bird, I proceeded to run down the stairs of the friend's house I was playing at and celebrated with a party of people who could've cared less that I just beat Guitar Hero II (this was still slightly before Guitar Hero exploded in popularity). Jordan continued to elude me, however, as I would always run out of Star Power and not be able to flail my way to victory by the time the Blue Note of Freedom arrived.

Guitar Hero II (360)

360 Version

Enticed by the promise of downloadable content and ten new songs, I picked up the 360 version of Guitar Hero II on the day of release. Although there was much more DLC released for later Guitar Hero installments, I found some of the GHII 360 DLC to be quite satisfying for my music taste--the pack of Bury The Hatchet/Ex's And Oh's/Detonation is still, IMO, one of the best DLC packs released for any rhythm game. Shortly after midnight on May 5th, 2008, I defeated Jordan for the first time in either version of Guitar Hero II. I have since beaten it three times, finally five-starring it on my fourth pass of the song on November 9th, 2008. Since I was under the assumption that I would never achieve a 1000 gamerscore on GHII because of the Kick The Bucket Award, my spirit was renewed by said bucket kicking. Three days later, I achieved one million with my roommate on Free Bird co-op and unlocked the final achievement, making Guitar Hero II the first game that I ever received 1000 gamerscore on.
