Gibson X-Plorer
The Gibson X-Plorer controller and its real life counterpart. (Scaled)
The
Gibson X-Plorer was the second official guitar controller released by
Red Octane. Designed for use with the
Xbox 360, it was released in conjunction with the 360 version of
Game_GuitarHeroII Guitar Hero II∞. Some stores also sold the X-Plorer with the 360 and PC versions of Game_GuitarHeroIIILegendsOfRock Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
The Gibson X-Plorer sported the standard five colored frets, a strum bar, a whammy bar, a tilt sensor, and start/select buttons. In addition, it also provided a D-Pad for navigation (which doubled as a strum bar during play) and the standard 360 button. There was only one version released, with the guitar entirely white. It connected to the 360 via USB.
Criticisms
The X-Plorer was widely criticized for its poor back button placement, rendering it virtually impossible to use for activating
Star Power. Simple mods have been conceived to fix the problem, including, but not limited to, taping nickles or cardboard to the top of it. More on these mods can be found in
User_BriGuy BriGuy∞'s
Guitar Modding 101∞ thread.
It has also been noted that the whammy bar is inferior to that of its sister guitar, the
Les Paul⇒. On
Game_GuitarHeroII Guitar Hero II∞ the deference is negligible, but it is much more of a problem in
Game_GuitarHeroIIILegendsOfRock Guitar Hero III∞ and its expansion, Game_GuitarHeroAerosmith Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.
