Upper-bound is a term used by debr5836 to refer to the star power path that uses 100% of the derived squeeze timing window, according to debr's spopt.pl program. The path is accompanied by an estimate of the resulting score, referred to as an "upper-bound score." As seen by some songs across all games (especially GH3), debr's algorithm has not quite been perfected, as many users have achieved scores above the upper-bound estimate on certain songs.

Upper-bound is frequently confused with the term "optimal," which simply refers to the highest possible score on a song that can be achieved. In other words, you can beat the Upper-bound score, but you cannot beat the optimal score on a song.

In addition, other path names used by debr5836 are Lazy Whammy, No Whammy, Big Squeeze, Bigger Squeeze, and Nearly-Ideal. For GH3, these names were changed to reflect the algorithm used, whether it be 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100% of the squeeze timing window.

For techniques on how to maximize score using paths, see Squeezing.

Technically his algorithm is not what's wrong, it's his values for the timing windows and the whammy rate. It is possible that some of the Upper-bound scores are higher than the actual optimal scores and are therefore impossible to achieve. Basically upper-bound scores are approximations of the optimal scores.
