Tom Brown (Born May 20th, 1986), better known by his online alias of
Alakaiser, is a self-proclaimed dork with too much time on his hands. Formerly, he was known as a moderator, then a senior moderator of
ScoreHero, before shedding that title to become an employee at
Harmonix Music Systems.
Prior to registering at
ScoreHero, Tom spent many of his days at Gamespot.com, where he served as a moderator from November of 2002 until September of 2005. During this time, he learned many things about forums and internet communities, which he applied to various other communities that he participated on over the years. Citing creative differences, Tom parted ways with Gamespot in September of 2005.

Tom's reaction to ScoreHero
In August of 2006, after a dying World of Warcraft addiction, Tom registered for
ScoreHero. He did so just after getting his battle axe in
Game_GuitarHero Guitar Hero∞, and wanting to compare his work with the internet, to see what the overall skill level of the site was like. He took a picture of his initial reaction to
ScoreHero's skills, which was received as very humorous by the existing members of the community. He started posting on the site's forums, getting to know the top players, and learning as much as he can about the game.
Soon, Tom became a respected member of the community, known for his friendly attitude, joking manner, and keen writing abilities. His skills at
Game_GuitarHero Guitar Hero∞ never got much better. On April 1st, 2007, he orchestrated a joke on the General Chat forum, where a fake argument over whether Coke or Pepsi was a better soft drink. This thread quickly became legend, and is now residing in the forum's
Hall of Fame
Tom was also well-known for being an advocate for
ScoreHero's IRC channel, promoting it in his signature at all times, with changing slogans about the channel.
Noticing negative trends in the community's overall attitude, Tom posted a thread in the summer of 2007 where he called out a lot of things that were wrong in the community. This thread was received very positively, from both the users and the staff. Many things that Tom pointed out were alleviated, albeit not totally eradicated. From here, Tom continued to work as a supporting role-model for new users, doing the best he could to help out new users and people with questions, and encouraging everyone else on the site to do the same.
In October of 2007, prior to the launch of
Game_GuitarHeroIIILegendsOfRock Guitar Hero 3∞, Tom was asked to join
ScoreHero's staff to assist the site even further. Being excited to help out the site further, he accepted right away. On November 5th, 2007, his position was publicly announced.
Tom continued to be a positive forum influence the best that he could, on top of managing the IRC channel. He worked very hard alongside the rest of the staff to ensure that the site remained as great as it was when he registered all the way back in 2006.
On July 21st, 2008, Tom was hired by
Harmonix Music Systems, in the position of a QA tester. Discovering that it would be too difficult to juggle both his time at Harmonix and
ScoreHero, he stepped down from his staff position on August 21st, 2008.
Mountain Dew
An example of Tom's Mountain Dew addiction
For years, Tom has been known for his addiction of Mountain Dew, drinking mass amounts of it daily. After building up a decent-sized collection of Mountain Dew cans on his desk at
Harmonix, he accepted a bet to go the month of September without drinking any caffeine. Tom won this bet, but it had an effect he didn't fully expect. He opened up a can of Mountain Dew on October 1st, and, much to his surprise, he didn't enjoy the taste. Lately, he has been drinking a wide variety of substances other than Mountain Dew.
Personal Life
Tom was born in Warwick, Rhode Island, and currently lives there. He attended Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, and graduated in 2004. He attended the Community College of Rhode Island for a brief time, but as of now, does not have a degree.
Tom has been a musician to varying degrees from a young age, avidly trying to expose himself to as much music as possible. As far as actually performing, though, Tom has always preferred music theory to actual performance. Some of Tom's favorite bands and artists include Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, the Foo Fighters, the Rolling Stones, and Rush.
Tom was born into a family that thoroughly enjoys sports, and it was passed on to him. Living in the New England area, he always rooted for the local teams, so his favorite teams are the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Boston Celtics. Tom is an avid baseball fan, and attends Red Sox games whenever it is possible for him to do so.
Alakaiser
Tom has been using the online handle of "Alakaiser" since 1997. The name originates from a video game for the Sony Playstation, known as
SaGa Frontier. In it, one of the protagonists, Red, has the ability to transform into a superhero named Alkaiser. Tom was a big fan of this game, and thought that it would be a good name to use online, replacing his old handle of Yoda52086. However, Tom misspelled it when he went to make it his name, and he didn't realize this until after the name registered. However, it worked out well, since Alkaiser had been taken already, and Alakaiser is rarely, if ever, taken at any internet community that he is a part of, so he always has a unique username that he can use.
Video Games
Tom has been playing video games since he was very young, as he grew up in a household with an older brother who is also an avid gamer. The first system Tom used was an
Atari 2600, and has used a multitude of systems over the years, including most of the "major" systems of the past 15 years.
When Tom isn't playing games like
Guitar Hero or
Rock Band⇒, he enjoys playing a lot of "casual" games, like
Brain Age and
Animal Crossing for the Nintendo DS, and
You Don't Know Jack for the PC. He also enjoys Role-Playing Games, such as
SaGa Frontier, and many of the games from the
Final Fantasy series. Tom plays some first-person shooters, but mostly only with a group. His personal favorite is
Team Fortress 2.
Tom also went through a period where he played
World of Warcraft heavily, helping a guild raid through Molten Core and Blackwing Lair as a mage class leader. He is a fan of Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, but feels that all of them, including
World of Warcraft, are missing something that keeps them from becoming his number one focus as a gamer. He thinks it might be the focus on level grinding, but he doesn't claim to have a better alternative.
